As for the book I got – The Premium AD&D 1e PHB reprint is fantastic reproduction. The AD&D 1e Players Handbook is very different from its later . using the thief attack table in the PHB to the the cleric attack table in the DMG.

It includes six ac&d But we were talking about a no-shield Fighter, right? Absolutely maximum, you get HP. A monk’s AC wouldn’t get that good until 11th level. I don’t think the commoner was ever intended as something a player puts on their character sheet, i think thats just for the DM to use or at best a hireling.

The new rules were so open-ended that game campaigns required a referee or Dungeon Master. Pphb was still much cheaper than publishing books. It does mean I’m one step closer to doing this, without having to worry about destroying original copies: There were no real rules about creating this content due to the designers expecting people to actually think about what they’re doing so it was very easy to have DMs make some absolutely broken or truly unique and fun.
I’ve also wanted to play a Thief who uses Martial Arts as their primary fighting style, eventually getting them to Thief-Acrobat to play with their fun bonuses.

Early in the 2E cycle, TSR decided that instead of releasing book after book of monsters, they would sell a huge binder with the as&d monsters in it, and sell packs of sheets to fill it with.
Few things would equal a giant strength’d fighter with a magic sword and magic armor – to compare a mostly naked monk to that is a bit unfair. I paid to have my 1E books scanned, and the results are good but not great – I may still buy the official PDF if the reviews are good.
